DESCRIPTION:Since the end of World War II\, the United States has provided
  material and political support for numerous governments that have committ
 ed atrocities\, including genocide. Some historical examples include U.S. 
 support for Indonesia (1965–1966 and 1975–1999)\, Pakistan (1971)\, Gu
 atemala (1981–1983)\, and Iraq (1987–1988). More recently\, the United
  States has armed and politically supported Saudi-led coalition members an
 d Israel as allegations of atrocities have been levied by various intergov
 ernmental and nongovernmental organizations.In this Critical Response Even
 t\, arms expert William Hartung will provide an overview of U.S. arms sale
 s to states which are actively engaged in armed conflicts and\, in some ca
 ses\, accused of committing violations of international law\, and what can
  be done about it. The Q&A will be moderated by Dr. Jeff Bachman\, Cohen E
 ndowed Chair in Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Cohen Institute Special

 s required.REGISTER HERE---Speaker Biography: William D. Hartung focuses 
 on the arms industry and US military budget. Hartung was a senior research
  fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and will start 
 as a senior fellow at the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) in Septem
 ber 2026. He was previously the director of the Arms and Security Program 
 at the Center for International Policy and the co-director of the Center
 ’s Sustainable Defense Task Force. Bill is the co-author\, with Ben Free
 man\, of the recently released The Trillion Dollar War Machine: How Runawa
 y Military Spending Drives America into Foreign Wars and Bankrupts Us at H
 ome. He is also the author of Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Mak
 ing of the Military-Industrial Complex (Nation Books\, 2011) and the co-ed
 itor\, with Miriam Pemberton\, of Lessons from Iraq: Avoiding the Next War
  (Paradigm Press\, 2008). And Weapons for All (HarperCollins\, 1995) is a 
 critique of US arms sales policies from the Nixon through Clinton administ
 rations. Bill previously directed programs at the New America Foundation a
 nd the World Policy Institute. He has been a featured expert on national s
 ecurity issues on CBS 60 Minutes\, NBC Nightly News\, the PBS Newshour\, C
 NN\, Fox News\, and scores of local\, regional\, and international TV and 
 radio outlets.This event is hosted by the Cohen Institute for Holocaust an
 d Genocide Studies at Keene State College as part of our ongoing series of
